Reference Sources

  • Recognizing Reference Sources (4th grade lesson) Students will become familiar with five different reference sources in the Media Center: Atlas, Dictionary, Encyclopedia, Card Catalog (Look Up Station), and the Internet. Students will be able to decide which is the BEST source to use to answer specific questions.


  • Dictionary Skills Students will successfully locate words in the dictionary and will demonstrate awareness of guide words
  • Dictionary Practice (pdf) You insert the word on the practice worksheet, the students will list the page number, guide words, what the word means/definition, a sentence using the word, and a picture of the word.
  • Dictionary Day Activities October 16th is Dictionary Day, named in honor of the birthday of Noah Webster, the father of the American dictionary. Use these resources to celebrate words and build literacy skills on Dictionary Day and everyday of the year!
  • Multiple Meaning Words


  • Thesaurus Practice Students will be able to choose words to convey meaning that is rich, colorful, and precise to enlighten the reader.
